Hi all degu lovers. My male degu got sick 10days ago. I brought him to the vet immediately. He had some cracking sounds when breathing. He said he got cold or probably pneumonia. Gave him 3 shots of antibiotics. Gave me gentamicin to give him 2 drops per day. For a week he got better. Brought himt o the vet back and he said he is ok for now. 2 days later (today) he got sick again. We have stopped the antibiotics. Now he has the same cracking sounds when he breathes and this time refuses to eat even treats. Got him to the vet this morning he gave him another 3 shots with different antibiotics. He said to come back in friday and if he is still not well he will try another antibiotic but first he had to consult somebody about it if it is suitable for rodents.
I am really worried because I don't think he will make it to friday. And am not sure if the doctor is right about the dyagnosis. Althoug he seems really into rodents and ex degu owner himself.
Could it be an allergic reaction from the wood chips?
Really if anyone has a clue about it please answer me. I know this is the best web site for goos in the world. I am really confused Sad  Sad  ... and scared Sad

I would remove the shavings from the cage and keep him on plain kitchen towel for now just incase it is the shavings and also provide him with warmth as degus crave warmth when they are unwell. Make sure he is drinking as you need to keep him hydrated. I can't say much more as the antibiotics will need time to work if they are working you should see an improvement in him within 24 hours, if you are worried at any time ring your vet. Keep us posted on how he is

Hi again. Today my degu's condition has not changed at all. Still the same breathing wit crackling sounds. This means antibiotics probably do not work. I gave him 2 drops of antibiotic this morning and despite the 3 shots and today's treatement the condition is the same. I got rid of the wood chippingd and put some warm cloth. Trouble is he is not eating  Sad
Hopefully he drinks some water as I check t regurarly. The vet said that one of the thingd he gave me to put in the water is some liquid with nutririons as he probably won't eat. Hopefully this keeps him still standing. Actually I noticed that he had gained weight and it looks like as if its abdomen is swollen. Could it be from the antibiotics or something else I do not know but he is definitely heavier. We are goin to the vet back tomorrow morning.

I have just come back from the vet. The abdomen got really swollen. And I was sure something was not right. Couldn't wait till tomorrow and got him to the vet ASAP. He said he is really swollen and touched his abdomen. After examining it closely he said that it is some kind of fecal mass building up in his guts. He said that there are a few not one single piece. That caused the abdomen to swollen and he gave hm a shot and said to stop all the antibiotics. He prescribed a  yellow paste to give him 2 times daily. Said also that there are some antibiotics inside that could help him if there is a respiratory infection going on. This is it for now.  Sad

Hi and thanks for the support guys. The vet said that the crackling soiunds could be because the expanding abdoment presses on the diafragm and causes the hard breathing. I read the Illnesses section and think that it could be the parazyte infection (mentioned under causes of swollen abdomen). After we came back from the vet I found one piece of feaces in the cage. And if it is what the vet says, my goo wouldn't be able to poo. So it could be an infection. Anyways I will keep giving him the yellow paste as it contains strong antibiotics and if it is a parasyte infection could help as well. I know that my vet does operate on cats and dogs but am not sure about degus. What exactly kind of disease caused your friend's goo to be operated? It would be nice if you can remember something about it.

Hi again. This morning my pet had no change in his condition. So I hurried up and brought him to a big vet clinic in the bigger city 30miles away. They done X-ray on him and the condition was confirmed. Final dyagnosis: Suffered from pneumonia from which he is almost 100% cured of, antibiotics helped him fight the pneumonia but killed healthy bacteria in his guts. Their proper function was influenced. Later the fecal mass started building up in the guts and gasses filed up his stomach pressing on the diafragm causing hard breathing. Unfortunately the doctor could not operate him because he is weak from the pneumonia and not fully recovered from it. He said if he puts him to sleep my degu will never wake up. So he said that treatment with shots and the yellow paste that we give him from the mouth will continue as well as lavement from the anus. We left him to be treated for 5 days. This is it for now.  Sad

My friends degu had a back up of faeces in the gut, if i remember correctly they gave her some stuff to help her pass the build up but she couldn't it was just too big and they had to operate and it was touch and go but she pulled through. The vet saidat the time he thought it was caused by a lack of fibre in the diet as there was no other cause he could see for the build up. I hope your little one pulls through this, sounds like you are in good hands with the vet your with now. They are right about the faeceal build up and how its caused, hopefully they can sort it all out for you *hugs*
