Hi,
Could you advise what is the best food to use Pets @ home guinea pig pellets or pets @ home chinchilla pellets only i'm getting a little confused with all the different foods available. Also what do you use for bedding, should i use the timothy hay or paper bedding from pets @ home

Hi
If you look at the ingredients in the chin food it's virtually identical to the guinea pig food. However you will see that the ginuea pig food is quite a bit cheaper. Mine two love it but I also give them dry veggies too - they won't eat fresh veg.
I feed my boys Timothy hay but give them Tesco Value (lot cheaper) for bedding with soft fluffy stuff from instore. It's worth looking around as prices vary considerably. |

I feed mine a mixture of the two pellets along side other stuff. Allthough the guinea pig ones have more added vitamins so better in the long run. Timothy hay and other hays should be available at all times as they are what helps to wear the teeth down. For bedding i provide mine with soft straw and meadow hay but they all tend to sleep in their hammocks or tunnels
I would look around at foods as some of the better foods P@H don't stock. A lady on here is making degu food and all the money goes towards her rescue so she might be worth contacting _________________

We use the Zooplus food now... our girls and boys would pick and choose from the GP food, and wouldn't touch the chin pellets. The Zooplus stuff isn't cheap, but we've had no cataracts etc since using it, and they eat every last bit. aslo we found PaH couldn't supply chin pellets in a big enough quantity (before we realised they hated them!). We must have fussy critters- they wouldn't eat the Vitakraft either... _________________ I am the loving pet of three cats, two chickens, a house rabbit, a gerbil, eight degus (and their rather unexpected offspring!) |

It's probably going to be a bit of trial and error. Degu's seem to have their own little prefernces - mine won't touch vitakraft either despite waiting weeks for my local pet shop to order it in. I would't buy anything in large quantities until you know what they like.
Good luck for when you have your goos, you'll find this site invaluable. |

I've had picky degus in the past but the ones at the moment eat anything you put in front of them
The zooplus food is excellent i buy a large bag of that myself and mix it into their normal food. I haven't had a cataract either in over 10 years well apart from the ones that have come into me with them but they have come from poor backgrounds _________________
