I was just wondering what the danges of molasses are. Today I just realized that not only do the chinchilla pellets have molasses, but the guinea pig pellets have molasses too  Shock . It looks like I'll be doing some food changing!

I just called the business where I get my pellets from and they don't have another brand of guinea pig pellets available. When I asked about the molasses in the chin pellets that I use he said that the molasses content was very small trace amounts of it because it isn't too good for chins either. I wonder if this is true?
They also said they're looking into ordering degu pellets and that they would order them for me if I wanted. Which brand would you say is the best for degu pellets?

Most food does contain mollasses, its added as a binding agent to make the food more palatable for the animal.  Through my research i have found most chinchilla pellets do contain mollasses as chinchillas can handle sugar a little better then degus. If you use these pellets as part of a mix (50/50 pellets and guinea pig mix) they shouldn't hurt too much not if given in small amounts and on a strict diet.

Personally i choose to avoid mollasses as much as possible. I've just changed my food over again as the company i was using for my guinea pig mix started adding sugar to it so we have just gone back onto Gerty Guinea pig (i like to alternate what i feed occasionally as they get picky  Rolling Eyes  ). I'm not sure what brands you have over there, Supreme petfoods make Gerty Guinea pig so that might be worth looking out for  Wink

Martins guinea pig is what i am feeding now, and it dosn't contain molasses.
I try to stay away from any sugars of any sorts, so when i give them a sunflower seeds as a treat i don't feel so quilty :p

Living World Extruded Guinea pig also dosn't contain molasses, it just costs more then the Martins and i find is harder to get.
