|
|
I don't have any hay that seems bad, but I did just replenish my stocks today. I like to give Imana a variety of hays, so I normally buy 3-5 small bags of different hays. But, with just having 1 Degu, and so many bags, it takes her a long time to go through all the hay and empty the bags.
Does hay just kind of last forever, as long as it doesn't get wet? I get the kind of bags that reseal like a Ziploc baggie, so I assume that as long as I seal the bag up after each use, and keep it dry that it will stay in good shape almost indefinitely. Is that a safe assumption?
When hay goes bad, is it obvious? Does it smell musty, or cake together? Or can it be like a stale cracker? - (you don't know it's no good until you bite into it, because it looks normal) _________________

| should be okay in a sealed bag for a fair amount of time in a dark dry and cool area. I dont think it lasts indefinately though - you can tell usually when hay goes off as it starts to smell musty firstly but if you are buying small bags that are stored right I dont think you will be running into any trouble |

I agree it won't last indefinately but if kept dry and cool and sealed it should last a fair while especially in small bags. Fresh hay should smell sweet and appetising, the first sign i look for with hay is the smell that usually indicates to me its going off.
I get through bags and bags these days with having two chinchillas i never have to worry of it going off anymore _________________
