They do indeed bite their own nails in order to keep them trim. Unfortunately i don't think it works too well as most degus tend to still have sharp nails no matter how much they chew on them

Oh so i wasn't seeing things 
The first time i held a Degu i thought it was biting me but it was just his sharp nails where he was clinging on to me as he didnt know me and was scared.

Yes they do tend to be pretty sharp, one slid down my back the other day and left his mark I keep rocks in my boys cages to try and keep them trim so when they scramble over them it wears them down
