Hi

When we bought Nippy and Nigel the pet shop said that they were feeding them Chinchilla food and that is what we bought for them.  However reading on this forum I realised that the food may not be ideal for them.  I was horrified to read the ingrediants last night and to read raisons, sure enough when I poured a bit into my hand and examined it there was a raison.  So we went out today and I have got them (from reading another post in this section) Burgess Supa Guinea Excel, they did not have any of the other food, do I need to mix it with the other Guinea ptg food to create a balance?  And shall I mix in a bit at a time with what they are already on to introduce them to gradually?

Thanks for your time.

Hi.....im horrified you can buy a chin food which
contains raisins.........these should only be fed
sparingly to chins......one at a time for a treat.
They should not be included in their food.

There are two brands of chin food i can think of containing raisins both equally as bad as the other for degus and chins. Its a common misconception to feed chinchilla food and a lot of people make the same mistake so don't beat yourself up about it. The case is you found out and have changed their diet for the better Smile

Burgess can be fed on its own or it can be mixed with a guinea pig mix, the choice is yours as neither method is bad. I personally mix my goo's food but they aren't all that picky eaters and do eat everything in the bowl so they get a balanced diet Wink

Thanks for the advice.  We assumed when we bought them that the Chinchilla food was ok, you would think that the petshop would know what they are doing,  sadly that wasn't the case Sad I dread to think how long they had been fed that Chinchilla food, the brand is Beaphar XtraVital Complete Chinchilla Food.

Sadly not all petshops know what they are talking about when it comes to degus Sad Aside from the raisins i don't think the food is all that bad not if they eat everything in it and not just pick at it Smile

Hiya.  I was using only the beaphar xtra vital degu mix but my degu seemed to be drinking and weeing a lot more on this mix.  The pet shop advised I used their own brand (P@H) chinchilla pellets.  Now reading the ingredients it says it has (from memory) unmollased raw sugar beet and full fat soya.  Now i think unmollased is ok - but full fat soya?  Can I have ur opinions please? x

I've been told the P@H pellets are rubbish for chinchillas. A friend on another forum has one that needs frequent dental attention due to a long diet of their pellets in the store...

But yeah, they have sugar in. I wouldn't use them for degus.

that was a quick reply!!! oh drat.  nothings ever simple is it?!  What do u feed urs?  Ive been down the continuously growing teeth road with other degus (vet said it was due to poor breeding - they also had cateracts and cysts Sad)  Its very expensive to have their teeth trimmed!  Infact the last time I was there having them burred down the vet suggested that he work alongside my boss (im a dental nurse)  in order to sort his teeth out.  Im not sure if id want to nurse for that proceedure.  Humans biting is bad enuff!! x

P@H chin pellets are as far as my current bag says ok for degus still. I use them occasionally for the goo's but tend to stick to supa guinea excel and beaphar care plus for my little guys. The current P@H chin pellets aren't supposed to be all that bad, my chins prefer them to a lot of other stuff and people on the chin forums say they are good as they have recently changed (early last year) the recipe and are made by a big firm now, not sure how true this is though?!?
