We have had 2 goos for a couple of months and recently got 3 more.
We push the 2 cages together and all of the new ones are fine. 1 of our original ones goes mad chirping all over the place (female) the male is not bothered but he keeps going up to the female and stroking her with his paw from a distance. This is the only time he does this.
She screams at him and goes for him and he just does it again and again. I am worried that they will hurt each other.
Can anyone help me and let me know why he is doing this. It agrivates the female more who would otherwise settle down.
We have put the male with the 3 little ones and he was fine for a while but the female with just 1 of the little ones went for it.
Can anyone make any suggestions on how to proceed? |

Have you gone through an introduction period with them? Scented them etc... ? If not this may be your problem as you are trying to put unfamiliar degus into each groups territory causing friction as degus can be funny things. It can take a long time and a lot of effort and patience to get groups of degus together so you may just have to hang in there and keep working with them I've been there a few times and not all intros work out as not all degus just like humans will get along. Are you planning to breed with them? _________________

When we got our first 2 we were told that they were both male. Typically 1 is male and 1 is female.
We are hoping to put the female with 2 of the baby females and the male with the baby male.
We have had them in 2 cages quite close together for 3 weeks and have tried to indroduce them once. As I said the male is so laid back and is fine but the female just goes mad.
I will have to be more patient and treat he with kid gloves. All the babies just want to sniff and investigate. Last night that the female and 1 of the babies were chirping at each other for about 30 mins so lets hope it is good communication. |

Did you try vanilla sand before the introduction? It can work wonders as it masks scents and helps intros go more smoothly. Another tip is to put them into the neutral area at the same time as it stops either party claiming the territory as their own.
It does take time and patience. I've had some degus who have gone together first time and become firm friends and i've had degus who have taken 6 or 7 attempts and some don't even want to know, every intro is different. Don't lose heart as it sounds like there is going to be a positive outcome as you only have the older female to win over _________________
