Degus do scratch a lot as part of their preening routine, could it just be this that you are experiencing? They also roll on even the tiniest bit of sand or grit in their cage so its not something i would over worry about unless they exhibit other symptoms such as fur loss, inflammed skin etc....
Regard trust, give them a little time if they are new and set aside 10 minutes a day to work with them. There is a taming guide on here somewhere, full of hints and tips i have used over the years which might be on use for you in training the timid one  _________________
