When you let your degus out - how do you prevent them from chewing the household stuff? I want to be able to let them out to play but I'm worried about them chewing wires etc
Any help on this one?

I let my guys out in my hallway as it is enclosed and there is nothing they can really harm in there apart from the paint work which is one thing you have to watch them for but i have found if said enough they seem to grasp the word no well till at least your out of sight Rolling Eyes If you are worried about wires invest in some tubing or wire tidies, i know Ikea sell them and they are about £4 and you run your wires through them and it keeps them out of harms way  Smile

I let mine out, but i find it alot of work to keep an eye on them and keep them in an enclosed area, as they are great climbers and jumpers, so even fences and barriers can be no match to them.

In the summer i let mine outside in the grass inside a rabbit cage top, they just love it.

Aw I've thought about getting a rabbit run so I can do that!
Do they pee a lot when they're out and about or is it generally ok?

I have had my guys leave one poop and that is it. They have never peed when out playing (though maybe in the grass). They are very good that way.

I had a rat chew one of the shoes from my favourite pair up once, they cost me quite a bit and he chewed through it in 5 minutes flat, i didn't find it till a few days later and was heartbroken but i definately learnt my lesson Laugh out loud

I really don't have a good room for them to run around in. I just let them out in my bed but they tend to jump of... I have no idea what too do? How to keep them in the bed?

If you can't let them out for a run around loose then another option is to make a small pen for them so they can have a good walk round but in a confined area such as your bed Smile

Anywhere where you have a little space will do, your bed was just an option Wink You can buy foldaway pens over here in the UK so i was thinking of something like that which you could put away after use so it wouldn't be a permenant pen Smile

Yes, I make what I call a little "Play Pen" for my darlings on the floor in the hallway.

The walls of it are tall cardboard - they can't climb cardboard!

I lay down towels on the floor under the play pen, so any poo or pee is self-contained.

I always sit in the play pen while she is in it, to make sure there is no naughty business, and also because then she can climb on me.

I have a whole set of toys and chew-ees and houses that go in the play pen, so she rarely gets into anything naughty any more.

I don't know who enjoys it more - her or me! Smile

I let my two degus out in the living room. I have placed all the cables in cable tidys and i move anything else they like eating but shouldn't like plants!

I find that they will suddenly decide they like nibbling something they have previousley completely ingnored. The most recent is a magazine rack!

However, if you tell them to stop when they start and then stand up to to move them, they eventually realise that they shouldn't be doing it and jump away when you tell them to or when you stand up!

I am sure when i move the sofa out i will find it has been chewed, but ultimately Sofa's can be replaced but my little degus only have one life to enjoy and i want to make sure they enjoy it as much as possible!

Mine play in the hall too most of the time. They run up and down the stairs, into the bathroom, climb 'their' towel and into the bath. They love to try and walk all the way around the bath too, knocking off all the shampoos etc as they go, lol

In the hall I have tunnels, a wood house they chew and play in, some apple twigs, two or three different kinds of boxes to hine in. Oh and last night I had to put my wooden clothes horse up to dry some washing, hmmmmm, wood and new = chew time Very Happy

When I clean them out they get to run round the kitchen with me (that's where they live). And if I'm cleaning, they can follow me around the living room and bedrooms. They love the bedrooms as they have so many places to hide. And it's so funny if the do something wrong, because when I tell the no, they try to run away on the wood floor, but although there legs are going at a hundred miles an hour, they just don't get anywhere, lol Very HappyVery Happy
